Communications during COVID-19: Emailing your team isn’t always the best way to communicate

April 20, 2020

A human resources magazine, Human Resources Director (HRD), recently released an article on the most effective COVID-19 communications, reporting that interactive messages via messaging apps such as Slack, Teams or WhatsApp have a 72 – 88% effective response rate over e-mails. It was found that e-mails have only a 15% open rate and less than 2% response rate.

Over the past six months, several legislative chan Over the past six months, several legislative changes have come into effect, with additional changes scheduled to commence from mid-2026.

📢 Fair Work Update: Protecting Penalty & Overtime Rates

On 30 August 2025, the Fair Work Amendment (Protecting Penalty and Overtime Rates) Act 2025 introduced important new protections for employees.

Under the updated Fair Work Act, the Fair Work Commission must now ensure that penalty rates and overtime rates in modern awards are not reduced if doing so would leave employees worse off.

What does this mean for employers?
It’s a timely reminder to review your pay practices, award interpretations, and payroll systems to ensure you’re fully compliant — and that there are no hidden blind spots.

📢 Workplace Update: Paid Parental Leave Protections

Effective 7 November 2025, employers are prohibited from cancelling employer-funded paid parental leave in the event of a stillbirth or the death of a child.

This means that if an employee would have been entitled to paid parental leave for a live birth, they remain entitled to that benefit even if their child is stillborn or passes away.
Importantly, this change applies to employer-funded paid parental leave and is separate from the Government Paid Parental Leave scheme.

Now is the time to review your parental leave policies to ensure they reflect these updated protections and are applied with both compliance and compassion.

📢Upcoming in 2026
Stay tuned for further updates to:
➡Increased Paid Parental Leave entitlements from July 2026
➡ Payday Superannuation Laws from July 2026

As we move into the second half of the year, it’s As we move into the second half of the year, it’s an ideal time to reflect and evaluate whether your HR practices are effectively supporting the company’s overall goals and objectives.

The "Start, Stop, Continue" process is a simple yet effective way to assess what is working well, what could be improved and what is more difficult than it needs to be. Some things to consider as a part of this process:

-	Is your company culture supporting your business goals, are your values reflected in everyday actions?
-	How is the employee engagement?
-	Does your remote working policy align with the company needs?
-	Assess the effectiveness of your current recruitment and onboarding processes.
-	Are there any skills gaps in your organisation that needs to be addressed to enhance performance and meet your goals?

Processes such as these help businesses and teams to identify strengths, address weaknesses, and make actionable improvements moving forward.

💙 Lets hear it for the boys 💙 This week is an Int 💙 Lets hear it for the boys 💙

This week is an International day to recognise and raise awareness, start conversations, and support men’s health—physical, mental, and emotional.

What are some ways you can promote Men’s Health Week in the workplace?

Health Fairs – Organise for a vendor or two that provide wellness services specifically for men to come onsite and talk about their services.
Wear Blue Day – Encourage staff to wear blue to create awareness and spread knowledge on men's health issues.
Onsite Health Screenings – Arrange for an on-site health screening with local healthcare providers such as blood pressure and cholesterol checks.

Check in on yourself. Check in on your mates. Because strength is being able to ask for help. 💪
